Google PD (Professional Development) for Teachers – Workshop

Aim: Professional Development (PD) for high school Computer Science (CS) teachers so that they in turn can interest their students in computer science fields.

Workshop date:  26th -30th November 2018

Time: 8:00am – 4:00pm

Venue: Strathmore University, @iLabAfrica- 4th floor Student Centre

Two workshop will last 5 days (will be held during the school holidays, in the months of November 2018 (26th – 30th November) and April 2019 (TBC))
  • Each workshop targets teachers from Nairobi and its environs i.e Kiambu, Kajiado and Machakos counties.
  • The workshop format will include lectures, group discussions and practical lab sessions.
  • A survey will be conducted before the start of each workshop to understand the expectations of teachers and skill level, and after to assess whether those expectations were met.
  • By the end of the training, teachers are expected to demonstrate ability to design and develop Web Solutions.
  • At the close of each workshop, Industry and/or Ministry of Education professionals will be invited to speak to the teachers and motivate them on the importance of computer science as well as technology for education.

An online Community of Practice (CoP)
This will be an online platform created to connect teachers who have gone through the workshops.
  • The CoP serves as a community of practice, bringing together computer science teachers who inspire and empower each other to meet the needs of students both in the classroom and beyond.
  • The CoP provides a platform for computer science teachers to meet and share ideas, challenges and best practices, as well as learn from each other on methods of teaching or best tools to use.
  • The platform archives relevant open source and MOOC resources for CS teachers. Participants of the two workshops can refer to these resources even after the workshop. Teachers who do not manage to attend our workshops can also use the resources on our online platform to broaden their knowledge and improve the way they teach.
  • Our ultimate goal is to reach out to as many teachers as possible and encourage their active participation through the community of practice.

Teachers we are targeting
  • Secondary school teachers
  • Should come from schools that already have at least one operational computer lab
  • Should be teaching computer science in their schools
