This department fosters collaboration between mathematics and the computing sciences for advancing study into the manipulation and interpretation of data to address some of society’s most urgent issues.

This department works in tandem with internal and external partners, including: The Business School, Institute of Mathematical Sciences and various industry partners.

The department and its partners collaborate to improve stakeholder outcomes in the multiple areas, some of which are: Cybersecurity, Business Intelligence & Analytics, Health, Communications, Civics, and Smart Cities.

One of the department’s aims is to train the next generation of Kenyan data scientists who are not only able to develop society serving innovative solutions, but also hold their own as data professionals anywhere in the world.

In addition to the new Masters in Data Science, to be offered from April 2021, the department offers the following trainings and short courses:

  • Certificate in Data Science
  • Big Data Analytics
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) training
  • Executive Business Analytics (an open and bespoke education offering)

 

The department has received several grants to work on climate, financial and immigration data, as well as consultancy projects in Health care, Agriculture, FMCG, Hospitality, Retail supermarkets, Banking and Insurance sectors.

The team is eager to fulfill one of its mandates to be an invaluable resource to businesses, governments and private entities by providing  expertise in data analytics.
